Inference Riddle Activity:

An inference is an educated guess based on clues or current information. We are going to create riddles for ordinary objects, offering details using all 5 senses, including a simile.  Once you have completed the riddle, post a copy on your Class Hour discussion web (1 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 6) under my posting, titled "Inference Riddles."  Do not post the answer until I give you that assignment.

Before continuing, print this page.

Steps

  1. Walk outside and find an object. (ex: a crushed coke can beside a garbage can)
  2. Describe the object using all five senses.
    Example
    • sight: crushed and red
    • sound: hollow clank
    • smell: sweet like a stale brownie
    • taste: thick sweetness with a kick
    • touch: smooth with ridges
  3. Write a descriptive paragraph using the above clues.   GUESS the object's story.  How did it get there?  This will be your riddle (75 words minimum)
    Example
It laid crushed in the browning grass next to the garbage can.  The sun reflected off its red smooth side.  In the morning someone drank the thick liquid, hoping the kick it gave would wake her for the morning classes.  Finishing, she crushed the can with her foot, then tossed it towards the garbage can where it clanked hollowly off the rim and fell in the grass, leaving a smell like stale brownies to greet passerbys.
