Purpose:
How would you like to go to Meijers' Garden in Grand Rapids. Or maybe you want
to stay closer to home and visit the African-American Museum in Detroit? A play? As a team
of 2 to 3, research a field trip in Michigan. Find the ideal cultural event for the class
to attend after Winter Break. If your
presentation is persuasive enough as a realistic plan, it could be chosen for our field
trip.
REMINDER: Purpose of a PowerPoint
presentation is to enhance what you have to say, not take the place. Think of it as
a visual outline of your ideas--a guide for you and your audience.
Instructions
Listed below are your guidelines to follow:
Step One: Each team must
research a minimum of three activities or events to attend after Winter Break. (Timeline:
2 days)
- Each teammate must research an activity or event as a possible field trips. It must be
culturally related to Arts, Music, Drama, Ethnicity, or History.
Find a source using the Internet and one from a periodical. You must use these Yahoo
links below for searches. Remember, the field trip must be in Michigan.
Appropriate key words for searching should begin with "Michigan" followed by
possible: arts, entertainment, music, museum, humanities, etc.
* = Emphasis on experiencing an ethnic culture
For each excursions:
- gather information about the place and/or event and its offerings.
- find a contact phone number (800 number preferred) and email address (if applicable)
- phone or email place for economic cost of entrance (not including transportation or
food)
Cite all sources (including phone calls or emails) in a team
annotated Bibliography page (Use MLA format which may be referred to in the student resources

Step Two: As a
team, narrow your choices to one place or event. Then assign individuals a category and
write an informative draft for each.
-minimum 150 words each
-one revision, rephrasing 35 words
-one clean revision copy
(Timeline: 3 class dates plus a weekend)

What background information can you teach the class as
preparation for the trip?
-Before going to the DIA, teach the class about Impressionist painting.
Economic cost for each student
Based on: entrance fees, meals, paying for chaperones,
transportation by school bus versus another mode
-Include a pie chart breaking down what each student will pay.
It will be necessary to contact the place or event by phone and/or email to
receive pamphlets and schedules to be passed out during the team's presentation.

Step Three:
Prepare and do a 5 to 10 minute PowerPoint presentation
(Timeline: After a 2 day PowerPoint workshop, 5 days for preparation plus 3 days for
presentations)
- Explain why your field trip should be selected.
- Describe the benefits of the field trip based on Cultural and
Economic value.
- Teach the class a concept that will help them to better appreciate the
experience.
- Include additional pictures,
brochures, and/or other primary documents that will enhance your presentation.
- The PowerPoint file should include:
- A strong advertisement devise and organizational style.
- 8 to 15 slides total
- Title Slide and Credits Slide with � date
- Annotated bibliography slide or linked MS Word link.
- Minimum of 50% of slides should have a relevant image
- Copyrighted pictures may only be used if a team
contacts the business in writing and receives permission in writing.
- Background color on all slides
- Transition between all slides
- Sound and video are optional (must be relevant)
- Minimum of one related link plus two Michigan travel links
- Link to presentation transcript.
- Button arrows in the bottom corners of each slide to go forwards
or backwards.

Goals:
- Evaluate potential field trips for cultural value based on newspapers and sites on the
Internet.
- Use communications skills of phone and letter writing to gather information and
permissions for usage of copyrighted materials.
- Practice and evaluate communication approaches for effective team dynamics, in the areas
of listening and cooperating.
- Analyze and evaluate the most persuasive way of presenting information on their selected
field trip through use of advertisement devices and organizational styles.
- Synthesize research into a persuasive PowerPoint presentation.

- Individual research of their proposed locations.
- Annotated bibliography (Use MLA format)
- Outline, notes, and REVISIONS for presentation transcript based on
individuals assigned section (cultural section, economic section, letter of permission to
the business for usage of copyrighted material).
- Paper copy of presentation transcript
- All steps fulfilled for development of PowerPoint file
- Presentation
- Effectively used an advertisement device and organizational style.
- Clarity - information is presented in clear understandable terms. Be specific and use
examples.
- Visually Appealing: Use of technology to effectively present clearly understandable
images that support presentation.
- Active participation by all teammates (standing is not
active).
- Length is 5 to 10 minutes.
- Individual reflective write assigned after all presentations are
completed.

grade, if your project is chosen by the class, you will receive extra-credit.
