Part One
In a creative piece, interpret one of the three
themes listed below. The theme must be the focal point of the creative piece.
All pieces will fulfill workshop requirements.

Options for Creative Piece
(Must be original)

Story

- Three chunk format (John Jakes)
- Dialogue (minimum 33% or story)
- Concrete and sensory details (3 of 5 sensory forms)
- Minimum: 3 paragraphs and 500 words

Poetry |
- Concrete and sensory details (3 of 5 sensory forms)
- Metaphor and/or simile
- Show ideas, do not preach.
- Minimum: 2 stanzas and 20 lines

3. |
Profile Article |
- Profile of a person or place
- Format: Narrative and/or Interview
- Concrete details and real experiences
- Minimum: 3 paragraphs and 500 words

4. |
Lyrics
(self recorded) |
- Concrete and/or sensory details (3 of 5 sensory forms)
- Metaphor, real experiences, and/or
simile
- Minimum: 2 stanzas and 20 lines

Required Workshop steps
Use Sign-Off Sheet to note completion of each step
- Outline or 10 minute free write of ideas for piece.
- Rough draft (rough sketch in case of art)
- Two revisions
- One group conference (4 in a group, including author)
Author provides copies for group. All takes notes on discussion.
- Publication copy turned in with previous work (listed above) AND
posted copy on the Hour's discussion web, under the "Novel Creative Piece" link.

Instructions
Part Two: One on one
presentation with the teacher
For 3 to 5 minutes, you will explain the thematic connections as
used in the novel and your creative piece. The key to this presentation is pointing
out and explaining specific points in the novel and your piece as they relate to the
theme.
Preparation Needs to be brought to Presentation
- Creative piece
- Outline of presentation that includes a minimum of two points of
discussion from the novel (include page numbers) and also your creative piece.
