Monday

  3. Email Mr. McCarthy using your class email.
    Subject should always begin: #th Hour: (example)
    Send me your birth date
    Always place your name and today's date at the top, such as:
    John McCarthy - September 20
  4. Sign-up your class email with The Case.com.
  5. Homework: Compile a list of three people who you apreciate for being supportive of you in some way.  Choose one and explain how and why (100 words)

Writer's Workshop
Session One: Tuesday/Wednesday

  3. We will write to someone a letter of appreciation (see Monday's homework)
    See complete instructions.
    -Outline big idea (who you appreciate and why), 2 main ideas (two reasons), general details for each main idea (one sentence summary of what you will talk about - this may change as you write your drafts)
    -Write your rough draft - 250 word minimum.
  4. Mini-Lesson on Engaging Openings (examples)
    intriguing question
    startling statement
    facts or statistics    		 background information
    experience or example
    thesis statement
  5. Homework - Complete rough draft with an engaging opening for session two.*

Session Two: Thursday/Friday

  2. Review Conferencing and Paper structure (example)

  3. Students will conference and revise.
    -use 3 of 5 senses with two similes
    -2 experiences
    -cut 50 words (no more than 20 words in one spot will count)
    -add 100 words
    -rephrase one sentence
    -add a conclusion that mirrors the engaging introduction.
  4. Final draft of letter (plus all previous drafts) is due Monday.*

  * = any draft that is emailed to Mr. McCarthy and used as a class example will earn the author 3 extra-credit points.
